Academic Division

Introduction

In NCTE’s structure, Academic Division relates to different academic functions aiming at strengthening academic activities on various Teacher Education Programmes (TEPs) conducted in various Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs). It provides leadership in the field of teacher education and coordinate different types of academic activities for its effective implementation.

Objectives

  • Coordinate the academic activities on teacher education
  • Develop Curriculum Frameworks and Model Syllabi
  • Prepare guidelines for conducting academic activities in TEIs
  • Conduct research in the field of Teacher Education
  • Provide resource support in the field of Teacher Education
  • Develop data base on various aspects of Teacher Education

Activities

  • Coordinates renewal of Norms and Standards for various teacher education programmes and provides professional assistance to the Standing Committees on Norms and Standards.
  • Coordinates consultations, seminars, conferences, etc. leading to evaluation of alternative models and policies on teacher education.
  • Evolves code of professional ethics and performance standards for teachers and evolves guidelines for teacher appraisal.
  • Undertakes surveys and conduct research on matters relating to teacher and teacher education to assist various committees to arrive at research-based decisions.
  • Reviews curriculum of various teacher education programmes.
  • Assists in publication work of the Council.
  • Coordinates with State Governments, UGC, Universities and other affiliating bodies.
  • Conducts survey and research on matters relating to teacher education.

Programmes

  1. Curriculum Framework
    • Developed National Curriculum Frameworks at different point of time i.e. in the year 1998 and 2009.
    • Coordinated the curriculum revision in the light of NCFTE 2009 as regards all types of Teacher Education Programmes by Universities offering Teacher Education and SCERTs/SIEs/Directorate of Elementary Education.
    • Constituted different curriculum committees for developing Curriculum Frameworks in regular 15 Teacher Education Programmes as per the recommendation of JVC, 2012.
    • Conducted Orientation Workshops at different places of the country on Regulation 2014 and New Curriculum Frameworks (on face-to-face and ODL mode).
    • Collected Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on Regulation 2014 and New Curriculum Frameworks and provided the answers in the NCTE website.
    • Developed model syllabi for 2-yr M.Ed., B.Ed. and D.El.Ed.Programmes.
  2. Curriculum on Refresher Course on Teacher Education
    • Developed curriculum for refresher courses on Teacher Education to be organized in Academic Staff Colleges in collaboration with UGC.
  3. Innovative Programmes
    • A Standing Committee has been constituted for Innovative Programmes and Curriculum Evaluation.
  4. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
    • MoU has been signed with NAAC for accreditation of Teacher Education Institutions in every five years.
    • MoU has been signed with RCI for developing materials on Teacher Education Programmes, curriculum and model syllabus on Special Education Programmes and other activities.
  5. Development of Database
    • Developing database on pre-entry test for D.El.Ed. B.Ed. and M.Ed. from each State and UT.
    • Developed database of Universities offering Teacher Education Programmes.
    • Developing database of Deans and Heads, Dept of Education of all the Universities offering TEPs.
    • Developing database on Teacher Education Institutions.
    • Developing database on Teacher Educators.
  6. Publications
    • Publication of modules and monographs on Empowering Teacher Educators in the line of the thought of Swami Vivekananda (six modules)
    • • Developing modules on Educational thought on Teacher Education of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Prof D.S. Kothari, Santh Kabir, Prof J.P. Naik
  7. Publication of Journals
    NCTE publishes three quarterly journals such as:-

    • Anwesika in Hindi
    • Indian Journal of Teacher Education in English
    • Teacher Support in Hindi and English.
  8. Resource Support
    • NCTE has a well equipped library with rich resources for the researchers and materials developed in the field of Teacher Education
  9. Study Conducted
    • Conducted study on Demand and Supply on Teacher Education for all the States and UTs for the benefit of policy maker and researcher and published volumes.
  10. Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)
    • As TET is considered to be an eligibility criteria for the professionals to be appointed as teachers at elementary school level, NCTE developed the guidelines in 2011. Most of the States conduct their own TET and CBSE conducts CTET for all the States and UTs basing on the guidelines developed by NCTE.
    • NCTE is in the process of revising the guidelines for elementary level and developing guidelines for secondary and sr. secondary levels of school education.
